Cleaners in a school in Barnstaple have won compensation for undertaking mandatory reading.
For many years cleaners had not been paid for taking the time to read safeguarding documents, compulsory for all staff. Due to their busy schedule and the low number of hours the reading could not be done during work time. But they had never been informed that they were entitled to be paid for it. Whether it was a case of accidental oversight or or not, it effectively amounted to wage-theft.
This year they decided to challenge it and they succeeded!
Upon hearing the news one of the workers was happily surprised, they had completely expected management to say “no” and do nothing. Little victories like these can help to change perceptions of what is possible.
Do not except any form of wage-theft.
