This reading group is free and open to all. We’ll be discussing sections I and II of part one of this important book (up to p.111). Ste. Croix argues that classes existed in the ancient world, that they struggled against each other for their interests and perceived them in that way and that the state was one arena for that struggle. He also shows that material analysis of ancient societies is a valid approach and that ‘classes’ are not a phenomenon of the modern world which is is anachronistic to apply elsewhere.
