The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), one of the largest and oldest radical international unions, has added its voice to the call for an immediate review of the case surrounding the continued imprisonment of two County Armagh men known as the Craigavon Two.

The call comes as members of the IWW endorses a twenty-day long national prison strike currently sweeping across the entire North America Prison System, to improve prisoner conditions and end the practice of prison slavery. The prison strike has been assisted by members of the radical union’s prisoners section known as Incarcerated Workers Organising Committee (IWOC) who have been recently growing with ‘imprisoned workers’ unionised across Europe and here in Ireland.

A spokesperson for the IWW Ireland stated:

“The case surrounding that of the Craigavon Two deserves all our attention, we are all too familiar with the actions of the state and how it is skewed in the interests of the rich and powerful, particularly when we bring into focus previous miscarriage of justice cases such as that of the Birmingham Six and the Guildford Four. The evidence presented to date suggests that the case surrounding that of John Paul Wootten and Brendan McConville should entirely be viewed in the same light as it is clearly a miscarriage of justice.

“For a decade or more the tragedies of Birmingham and Guildford were viewed by many as something to be hidden, ignored or brushed under the carpet, whilst innocent people died or remained behind bars. We cannot allow the same thing to continue to happen in this ongoing saga of the Craigavon Two, which is why we add our voice at this time to the chorus to date, who equally believe that an injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

“To date, the IWW is one of many other trade unions and human rights organisations who have called for an immediate review to fully investigate this case which is a blatant miscarriage of justice.”
